Environmental assessment and ongoing monitoring to identify and safely manage previously unreported asbestos-containing material on a remote island redevelopment site.

BBN Consulting was engaged to support early works for a major redevelopment on Great Keppel Island, Queensland, by assessing the presence of asbestos and other environmental contaminants prior to demolition activities. Given the island’s remote location and sensitive surrounding environments, a clear understanding of contamination risks and volumes was required to inform safe, compliant and staged removal works.
» Remote island location with complex access and logistics, 18km from the nearest port
» Sensitive rainforest and coastal environments requiring careful contamination management
» Residual asbestos not identified during earlier demolition works
» Large stockpiles of asbestos-containing material requiring staged removal and ongoing monitoring
» Identified asbestos containing material not captured in earlier reporting
» Supported safe removal of initial stockpiles via two barge loads of approximately 1,100 tonnes each
» Confirmed additional 5,000 tonnes for staged removal
» Reduced risk to workers, stakeholders and environment
» Provided timely advice supporting stakeholder engagement and protected the client from regulatory and reputational risk
